Q&T WITH VAULT49...

Q&T WITH VAULT49...

We are very pleased to welcome the multi-talented New York design studio Vault49 to ClickforArt.com this month. We decided to share a cup of fine english tea and split some biscuits...

Vault49 - A is for Acid / screenprint

Your name, age, location, education? Vault49 is a boutique design, illustration and photography studio hailing from London and now based in New York, 7 years old, educated at the School of Hard Knocks, London.

Can you explain your art? We emerged as two passionate designers fresh out of college and obsessed with beauty, craft, and creating devils in the details - all while working from half a student bedroom.  Today we still have the same entrepreneurial philosophy but there are more of us. Our team contains a wonderful cross-pollination of creative talent including industry leading illustration, graphic design, art direction, animation, photography, web design, interactive design...

We’re storytellers in the classic fashion and our beautiful work is threaded with diverse narratives, innuendo, and a macabre sense of humour, all designed to continue to reward the viewer with new discoveries and a prolonged appreciation of the craft and detail featured in every Vault49 creation.

We find that our work is usually critiqued best by others.  The historical influences and associations are difficult for us to spot because we are all so immersed in concepts and production that perspective can be hard to achieve.  However, it’s easy for me to say that our work is characterized by genuine creative talent, innovation, craftsmanship, and a love of the human touch, whether that’s in a silk screen print or a piece of vector art.

Where do you get your inspiration? It seems impossible to go through life without daily inspiration hiding in unexpected places behind every turn.  We’ve already got enough ideas to last us a lifetime, the challenge is trying to pick the ones that will be most fun!

Which other artists Inspire you? James Jean, Mario Hugo.

What has been your favourite project to date? It’s usually the one we’re working on at any given moment, and now is no exception.  We’re designing a huge flag which will be hanging outside a major advertising agency on 5th avenue, New York.

What are you working on at the moment? Alongside the flag we’re working on the latest season of clothing for the infamous Artful Dodger brand – Vault49 have been the dominant design team behind the last 22 seasons of clothing, both before and after Jay-Z bought the brand.  We’ve also got an incredibly exciting partnership in the pipelines which we believe is going to change the creative horizon for our industry as we know it.  Big ideas!

What is your favourite piece of your own work at ClickforArt.com? Why? Fairytale.  It represents the diversity of our studio with 4 of us having worked on this in painstaking detail, and photography by Michael Creagh at Vault49.  It’s also a seminal piece for our studio as we aimed to provide a marker between our finely crafted art and cheap imitation.

Also the new Isometric Series. Vault49’s Iso series is the visual product of a misspent childhood skipping school in favour of Street Fighter and Sega Rally down at the arcades.  This crafted series of designs showcases the human touch which runs through all Vault49 work, combined with a digital finesse.  The Iso series is a reaction against the repetitive, formulaic designs that are everywhere at the moment, and by restricting ourselves to working within an fixed grid it’s our goal to show that even though we all have the same tools, everything doesn’t have to look the same – creative vision is more important that Photoshop skills.

Multi talented artist Vault49

What is your favourite piece by another artist at ClickforArt.com? Why? The ‘Girl’ Pillow by Jules.  Often Vault49 work is very intense, and it’s refreshing to see something so playful.

If you could design one thing or see your art applied to one thing, what would it be? We want to design artwork that goes below the ice at a skating rink.

What is currently hanging on your walls? Vault49 screen prints, Michael Creagh photography, and a Si Scott glow-in-the-dark print.

What advice could you give to a young artist reading this? Fine craftsmanship will outlast any trend.

What do you do when not working as an artist? We’re all in a synchronized sky-diving team.

Lastly Tea or Coffee? English Breakfast Tea!

And most importantly what biscuit/ snack/ cookie would you choose with your tea or coffee - and would you dunk? Milk Chocolate Hob-Nobs, chilled from the fridge!  Every British friend of ours who comes to visit is instructed to bring as many packets as customs will allow.
