Graphic Art
Graphic art is one of the most communicative of all art forms. Born out of advertising and design its emphasis is on passing a message to the viewer which it achieves by creating dialogue between text, colour, shape and line. The results can be highly glossy, finished images in which balance, rhythm and unity are carefully controlled. Computers are now just as much the graphic artist’s tool as the paint box or pencil, but the art created does not have to look hi-tech or futuristic; beautiful free-hand drawings, etchings and engravings can all deliver the graphic effect. Magazine art work, book design, record sleeves and web design are all examples of Graphical Art put to practical and decorative use. As pure art it oozes mood, style and cool. At its most aggressive it can be pure statement, but in more subtle manifestations it will be clever, emotive and, perhaps because of its close relationship with the commercial world, very comfortable to live with.
