Not all landscapes combine fields, trees, lakes and cows. Cityscapes and urban backwaters are also seized on by today’s contemporary artists. What unifies all these paintings however is the importance of balance, space and the tensions played out between the horizon and the arrangement of features between the top and bottom of the frame. Specific locations with recognisable landmarks can be brought to life in photo-realist detail, or dreamier, more implied senses of place and time can be sketched and suggested with rougher outline and freer technique. Atmosphere is the over-riding emotion created in these works, stimulating memory and often evoking peace and reflection in the viewer.
