The city! Love it or loath it, it’s urban sprawl and human stew has inspired artists for centuries. Graffiti artists throw up their images onto the fabric of the city itself, commenting back with humour and personality on what it means to live in such crowded proximity to fellow citizens. Urban art can seem rough and ready, it’s inspired by tribes and almost always shouts for attention, living with visual noise, it’s stimulating and refreshing.
Suburbia too can also be a seductive muse, whether it’s the weed that grows through the tarmac of the station car park, or the deserted bandstand at dusk in the deserted park.
Other artists prefer to recreate an image of the city which follows more classical lines through photo-realist portraits of tower blocks or six lane motorways. Urban images can give you the city buzz without the stench of petrol fumes and pools of last night’s vomit on the pavement. Perfect!
